How Seoul subway fares work
- Base fare ₩1,550 (card) covers the first 10 km, which is most trips inside central Seoul.
- +₩100 every 5 km from 10 to 50 km, then +₩100 every 8 km beyond.
- Single-journey ticket is ₩100 more (₩1,650) plus a ₩500 deposit you get back at a refund machine.
- Transfers are free inside the gates. Changing lines never adds to the fare — only distance does.
- Youth (13–18) pay ₩900 and children (6–12) ₩550, but only with a registered Korean card. Tourists usually pay adult fare.
- Early-bird discount: 20% off before 06:30 with a card.
- Exiting the gates and re-entering within 30 minutes counts as a transfer (60 min between 21:00–07:00), up to 4 times.

FAQ
Does transferring lines cost extra on the Seoul subway?
No. As long as you stay inside the ticket gates, you can change lines as many times as you like. The fare depends only on the distance between your entry and exit stations.
How much is the subway from Seoul Station to Gangnam?
About 9.5 km, so the base fare of ₩1,550 with a transit card applies. The ride takes around 25 minutes on Line 4 then Line 2, or via Line 9 express.
Can I use a credit card to ride the subway in Seoul?
Foreign contactless credit cards are not accepted at most gates yet. Buy a T-money card at a convenience store, or a WOWPASS at the airport, and load it with cash.
Is the Seoul subway cheaper than Tokyo or London?
Much cheaper. A 10 km ride costs ₩1,550 (about $1.10), roughly a third of a comparable ride in London.
